The Acid Wash & Vintage Fade Trend: Why Washed Streetwear Is Here to Stay

Where Did Washed Streetwear Come From?

Washed and faded clothing has roots going back to the 80s denim era, but it's had a full-scale streetwear revival over the last few years. The appeal is simple: worn-in clothing looks lived-in, real, and effortless. In a world of perfectly pressed fast fashion, something that looks aged stands out.

The Different Types of Washed Finishes

Acid Wash: Created using bleach or chemicals to create irregular, high-contrast fading. Every piece comes out slightly different, making each item genuinely unique. It's bold and works best as a statement piece.

Snow Wash: A softer version of acid wash — lighter, more diffused fading that gives fabric a dusty, frosted look. Great for hoodies and sweatshirts where you want texture without being too loud.

Garment Dye / Pigment Dye: The whole garment is dyed after construction, which creates natural colour variation at the seams and edges. This gives a subtle, vintage look that ages beautifully with washing.

Vintage / Stone Wash: Tumbled with stones or enzymes to soften the fabric and create a gently faded, broken-in look. Common in denim but increasingly used across cotton sweatshirts and tees.

Why Washed Pieces Work in Any Wardrobe

The beauty of a washed garment is that it does the visual work for you. A plain oversized tee in a clean white looks basic. The same cut in a snow-washed grey looks intentional and considered. The fade adds depth and texture that elevates the simplest outfits.

Washed pieces also pair well with everything — clean basics, other textured pieces, or even tailored trousers if you want to mix casual and structured.

How to Style Washed Streetwear

Keep the rest of your outfit clean when wearing a washed statement piece. Let the faded texture be the focus. Neutral tones and simple silhouettes work best around it. Avoid pairing two heavily washed pieces unless they're in the same colour family.

VALERO's Washed Collection

Our ImpactFade, FadeOut, and RawFade lines are built around this aesthetic — every piece is washed for a unique finish that gets better with age. If you haven't worn a quality washed tee or hoodie before, it's one of those things that's hard to go back from.
