Heavyweight vs Lightweight Streetwear: Which Cotton Weight Is Right for You?

What Does GSM Mean in Clothing?
If you've ever noticed numbers like 280g, 350g, or 420g on a garment label, that's the fabric weight measured in grams per square metre (GSM). The higher the number, the thicker and heavier the fabric. It's one of the most reliable indicators of quality in streetwear and casual clothing.
Lightweight Cotton (Under 180 GSM)
Lightweight fabrics are breathable, soft, and ideal for summer or layering. They drape loosely and feel barely-there on the skin. The tradeoff: they can feel thin, lose shape faster, and may not hold up as well to heavy washing. Best for tank tops, summer tees, and inner layers.
Midweight Cotton (180–280 GSM)
This is the sweet spot for everyday tees and casual shirts. Midweight cotton feels substantial without being heavy — it holds its shape well, washes reliably, and works across all seasons. Most quality basic tees land in this range. If you want one versatile t-shirt weight, this is it.
Heavyweight Cotton (280–400 GSM)
Heavyweight fabrics are where streetwear gets serious. Thick, structured, and durable — a heavyweight tee or hoodie feels premium the moment you pick it up. These garments hold their shape over years of wear, resist pilling, and have that satisfying weight that reads as quality. Perfect for hoodies, sweatshirts, and statement tees.
Ultra-Heavyweight (400+ GSM)
Reserved for the most premium pieces — thick enough to function as outerwear on their own. Hoodies and sweatshirts in this range feel like wearing a blanket in the best possible way. They're built to last and look better with age as the fabric softens naturally.
